Short-handed sailing: Parallels between a race boat and a family boat

I have remarked in other posts http://www.practicallysailing.com/blog/short-handed-sailing-in-the-ocean-the-bermuda-12-and-the-mini-transat that many folks do not appreciate the closeness of the relationships between the average cruising boat and some of the ocean-going single-handed "race" boats. In this series of articles I will discuss some of the aspects where I think average cruisers can benefit from the experiences, techniques, equipment and thinking employed in the shorthanded offshore racing scene.
